Here is a list of what I personally think are great games to play on the PS2.
Dynasty Warriors 4 - (Action) (Rated: Teen)
This game is based on
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novels. While it may not follow the books in some places, it's still a really awesome game. I personally believe that the Dynasty Warrior series (excluding the first) is the best series ever created. In this one you have ~45 characters to choose from, each with unique weapons and move sets. There are many items to boost your character's stats as you battle your way to prove who is the best, once and for all. It is common to get between 100-400 kills per stage. It's a really great game that can keep you busy for a long time.
Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends - (Action) (Rated: Teen)
An expansion to the above. This adds 1 new weapon to each character and about 7 new items. The two modes that come with this game can not befound in the original. Legend Mode has one stage per each character. The stage is based on something important that happened to that character (example: LuBu's battle at Hu Lao Gate). Xtreme Mode is another mode, but isn't too great. It's fun every once and a while, but isn't too fun. Also the enemy AI is extremely improved in this verison than the original. I recommend having both games and not just this one alone, for all you'll have to play is the 42 character missions. There is also two difficulty levels added: Beginner and Expert. Beginner makes the game extremely easy, while expert can make it really hard at times.
Samurai Warriors - (Action) (Rated: Teen)
Same concept as the above, but set in Japan with about only 15 characters. Still, this games is very unique compared to the Dynasty series, but the endless killing of enemy privates and troops still remain. A new mission system awards you for each special job you complete. New to the whole Warrior type of games by
Koei, each character can spend skill points and improve in different skills. This is a really great idea because it can make each character unique and a fun experiance each time you play.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance - (Action/Adventure) (Rated: Mature)
The fifth game in the Legacy of Kain series. "Oh man, I haven't played the others!" That's ok. Crystal Dynamics created this game with that thought in mind. No matter if you've played Blood Oman 1 & 2 or Soul Reaver 1 & 2, you should be able to really enjoy this one. This game has nicely paced battles with a better battle system than previous games. You get to play as both Kain, the greatest vampire that ever lived, and Raziel, one of Kain's liutenuets that was casted into the abyss to be reborn with the powers to steal souls. This is very story driven, but it's a great story.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness - (Strategy/Tacitcal RPG) (Rated: Teen)
Liked Final Fantasy Tactics? Well this game is kinda like it. You play as Laharl, a Demon Prince, on a journy to rule and manage over the Netherworld. Along your journy you meet many people from different realms, like Earth and Heaven. This is a lighthearted story and can be very humorous at times. Based on your proficiantcy with a weapon, you gain different skills. There are many different types of demons that you can hire onto your team to drive back the opposing forces. If you are really into the game, there are many side quests and many rare items to be had. Also if you are a perfectionist and love to get the highest level in every RPG you play, you'll have a good time with this. The highest level is 9999. A great tactical RPG.
Ace Combat 04 - (Action/Simulation) (Rated: Everyone)
You play as a pilot code named "Mobius 1" who goes from just another pilot to hero. It's your job to fly one of 18 jets of your choosing to destory an evil government bent of control. As you go from stage to stage you gain money to buy new bombs/rockets and new ships. This is a very well done game with a decent story. The levels are huge and the graphics are stunning. The highest altitude you can reach is ~45000, and by then everything looks like specks.
SOCOM II: US Navy Seals - (Third Person Shooter) (Rated: Mature)
It's your job to stealthly go into unfriendly territory to prevent bad things from happening. You control your squad of three other computer units with the use of a MIC. What makes this game better than the first is that it has more weapons and the graphics are a little bit better. The multiplayer online aspect it really great and where most of the fun can be had.
Kingdom Hearts - (Action/RPG) (Rated: Everyone)
You play as Sora on a quest to aid in the stopping of the heartless from taking over universe. You are teamed up with Donald and Goofy as you go from world to world helping the locals, finding your friends, and sealing keyholes. Sora weilds the Keyblade which is only granted to those with the right heart. Many classic Disney characters show up and so do many Sqauresoft characters. There is much to do and follows a good plot.
.Hack// Series - (MMORPG/Simulation) (Rated: Teen)
Kite was just your normal newbe on his first MMORPG with his friend in the game called The World. Soon after he started, weird things began to happen to many users who played the game, leaving many in a coma. Kite journies across 4 games to find and stop the what is ever doing this and to save his friend Orca. There are references here and there of the Anime, .Hack//Sign. Along his journy Kite makes many friends to aid him in getting to the bottom of the problem. Will Kite beable to save the comatose victums before CCCorp shuts down the systems, thus killing the comatose? Each game comes with a DVD with extra information and 45 mintues of a mini series that runs along the same time line of the game. This is a simulated MMORPG, and doesn't require the internet (a comman question).
Gungrave - (Third Person Shooter) (Rated: Mature) [Recommend you rent instead of buy unless you are a Gungrave buff]
Gungrave the game is either based off the anime or the anime is based off the game. Either way it's connected to the anime. Anways, this game is very short and can be easly be beaten within 3-4 hours (if you've already played through it a couple of times). It has cell shaded graphics and a unique story. You play as BEYOND THE GRAVE, or Grave for short, on his 'quest' to stop his former partner from doing evil things and also to get revenge. To give a small background without too much spoiling, Grave has already died, but "Dr. T" brought him back to life. Grave is armed with two pistols with unlimited ammo and a coffin that makes him a walking tank. I personally really enjoyed this game and have beaten many times. But like I said above, I recommend renting it or you could probably buy it for real cheap. It's really short (only 7 levels) but is really fun. Oh, and the creator is the same person who makes Trigun ^^
Gungrave Overdoes - (Third Person Shooter) (Rated: Mature)
Ahhh, another Gungrave game. I was finally able to get my hands on it. You might wanna check the bargin bin for this one, with it's low MSRP, it's worth it. Since I loved the first one, I was excited to get this one. Instead of just playing as Grave you also get to play as two other characters, a Ghost haunting a gatiar and a dual weilding gunbladesman. The story continues a few years after the events of Gungrave (the first game) and you will see familiar characters from the previous game. The story is pretty good and the later missions get tough. It's got about 9 stages, making it a pretty short game, but it has a lot of replay value.
Shin Megami Tensei - Nocturne - (RPG) (Rated: Mature)
You are a teenage boy in Tokyo just worring about meeting up with some friends, when the end of the world happens. You roam the world finding your friends and trying to either create or destory the new form that Tokyo has taken. It is filled with demons that you can persaude to join you and will end up fighting for you. The SMT series is really great, and I'm glad that Atlus brought one over to us for the PS2. The soundtrack is pretty wicked also. Also can't forget that Capcom's very own Dante (from Devil May Cry) appears in the game. Check it out, and hopefully you won't be dissatisfied.
