Default Virginia Tech shooting incident

I'm not sure how many people keep up with the news these days, but today (4/16) Virginia Tech (located in Blacksburg, Virginia) was invaded by a gunman. He killed two in a local dorm at around 7:30 am and over 30 more innocent people who were trapped in a General Ed. building later in the morning (I won't go into the details as to how they were killed-it was simply sick). There are still many more in critical condition being held in the local hospital. When I spoke to a nurse who worked at Montgomery Hospital she said the outlook for them looked grim. Tonight it was announced that Virginia Tech holds the record for the worst shooting massacre known in recent history.
On a personal note, I live within walking distance of the campus. It was eerie to hear the emergency sirens sounding all day long and see loaded police everywhere. What's worse is knowing that innocent people were killed just minutes away from where I lived. My roommate (one of my best friends) almost went to class this morning in the building that got hit. Thankfully her teacher cancelled her class before hand, otherwise she could've potentially been among the 30. I do know her old dorm mate has two friends that were killed and another who is currently in the hospital for an injury.
I would really like to know what could drive someone to massacre classrooms of students and professors (for no known reason) and then commit suicide afterwards. It blows my mind. I can't even imagine what their families must be going through. Does anyone else have any opinions on this? Was anyone here affected by today?
BTW-for anyone who would like to support Tech-tomorrow (4/17) is Maroon day in honor of those who died (wear something maroon colored). Hokie (mascot) colors are maroon and orange. The memorial will be held on Tech campus at 2pm. I'm fairly certain some major news crews are coming in for the memorial. I heard something about the Today Show and CBS-if anyone is interested. I know I'll be there.

Hmm... y'know, this sounds an awful lot like Columbine?

And it is sad that 30 people die (and many more are trying to survive), but, really, what more can they do but give them a proper burial? And what can most people, people who have absolutely no relation to these people, do about the matter? Nothing.

I suppose we could try different ways to prevent it from happening again.

Aside from having armed guards at every door and window of every school in the country, anyone have any ideas?
