It shows how light hearted and easy going he is. You can see the difference in his speech pattern when he's serious and when he's not. I like it because it adds to his character.

Kenshin's manner of speech with the "sessha" (this one) and "de gozaru" (akin to desu) is called keigo, a very old fashioned and polite pattern of speech used by samurai in the Feudal Era.

Kenshin's use of keigo in Meiji Japan would be equal to someone speaking Medieval English in the modern USA.

Really? Kenshin was never funny in the dub? Now, it's been years since I've seen it (back when it was on [as]), but I'm pretty sure he had funny dialogue in it. At least his rather formal and archaic dialect, the same he uses in the translated manga...
