i have four legs in the morning
two legs in the afternoon
and three legs in the evening
what am i?

A human being.

Morning/Afternoon/Evening represent phases of a person's biological development.

Morning - Birth. As a baby we crawl, thus '4' legs.

Afternoon - normal childhood and adulthood, we walk on two legs.

Evening - Advanced old age, we need a cane to walk around, thus three legs.

it actually comes from ancient egypt... people who were lost in the desert would halluacinate that the sphinx was talking ti them and gave them this riddle... it was believed that if you answered this riddle wrong then the person would lose their soul

Its also the riddle Oedipus answers to lift the plague on Thebes in the aptly named play Oedipus by Sophocles. I read the play in English a couple of months ago...
