Default Smart and Courage Riddle

There is a story from ancient times, about mean moneylender, who had lent money to a trader. Because of setbacks one after the other the trader was unable to pay.

The trader had a pretty young daughter and the devious moneylender had his eyes on her.

To show his devious helpfulness, he suggested that the trader would agree to his marrying the young girl, he would forgive the debt of else hell would break loose.

Both the trader and the daughter were in a fix. The moneylender pretended to be generous by proposing that let fate decide. He proposed that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag and the girl would pick one pebble. And if she picked the black pebble, she would have to marry him and the father’s debt would be forgiven. But if she chose the white pebble she would not have to marry him and the debt would still be forgone.

The daughter was not just pretty but also very intelligent . she didn’t want her father to go to jail, she agreed to the proposition. The day came when the whole village collected to see the fate of the trader and his daughter. They were standing on the bank of the river full of pebbles.

The moneylender stooped down to pick up the two pebbles. Making sure nobody was noticing, he picked two black pebbles so that he could make sure he married the girl. Quietly , the sharp eyes of the girl were also watching. The girl then asked to pick one pebble, upon which her and her father’s fate rested.

" Now the Question is How the Girl acted to Save herself and Her Father from the Wicked Plan of Money Lender "

The daughter would use sleight of hand to show the trader and the public that she picked a white pebble. And when the trader would then expose himself with his wicked plan.

Well if she picks one and tells him to pick the other and then reveal his hand, if the pebbles he has is black then she wins cause hers would be white. She then woouldn't have to show her pebble at all!

I think that you are almost correct, but there is still a chance that the moneylender will refuse to pick a pebble. There is only one sure-fire way to have her not married and her father's debt removed. Simply, as she picks the pebble, she would not show it, then trip and fall, like women of her time would "stereotypically" do, and drop the pebble. With no form of proof of what pebble she picked, she would simply say, "Well, what ever pebble is in the bag, must be the opposite of what I chose."

I think this is the best way for her to get what she wants, logically.
