world war 1

It's world war one and an officer wakes up early one morning and can't get back to sleep. he silenty calls of his maid to get breakfast, eats, kisses his sleeping wife goodbye, and send's his maid away before going to work. While in the elevator on the way down it suddenly stops and all the lights go off. In that instant he knows that his wife has died. How?
