Cds last quite awhile unless scratched. Files will not become corrupted for at least 10 years

Originaly i heard conflicts over this...

Realisticaly not all disks are of the same life expactancy.

Cdrws, are by far the worst, cheap ones sometimes start having problems within even 2 years... rarely earlier... though often also lasting a good 5.
With some drives and disks you can perminately burn a cdrw, causing it to last more reliably, basicaly using it as a cdr, but its still not as good as a real one.

Cdrs, very the widest, cheap ones tend to manage 5-10 years, normal quality tend to lean on the 10 alot... Archiving quality cdrs(expensive buggers...) can theoreticaly last MUCH longer... but as noted cost... alot.

Machine printed/burnt cds, aka what most computer games are found on tend to be a quality up, because they were only designed to be written once, ever, they last the longest, i have yet to see one die without being scratched, though its definately possible, i have no clue when it would happen...(ive got a few early cd games around... they still work... perfectly)

This is mostly off personal experiance and what my freinds have experianced... but should be about right...

Oh, this is of course considering your storing them in a dark, dryish cool place.

Heat, mosture, and above all sunlight cause major aging and damaging effects over a reltively long time, although the amount of effect this has is still simularly preportinate, i had a factory-hard-burnt disk that i left in a sunny window for a month, still works... however ive lost cdrs in a few days before, and once cdrw in a full day... Opaque cases will help, and indoor lighting shouldnt be damaging realy(although full spectrum lights will do more than others...) Also finger oil and saliva are very damaging to disks, breathing on them and wiping them off is quite bad for them, and touching the underside is rather bad too... nuf said.

Sorry for the insanely drawn out explanations, but i hope you learned from this all you ever need to know, and then some on the subject, then agian, i wouldnt blame you for skipping over most of what i said.

I think it also depends on the disc quality.

data stored on discs can be erased if you do not store and handle it properly. also how long the data stays on disc depends on thew quality of the burn and the disc quality

theoractically cd-rom are expected to last 50-100 years. Many other factors detemine the actual lifetime.

i know that all my floppy disk data are gone by now
i have not touch my backup floppy disk since....1998
