Hmm....that's hard. I like them both for different reasons. Ed cuz he's funny, talented, and he's so dedicated to his cause. And then Al cuz he's just so darn cute!

I have to say Ed is much more responsible - and, at the end when dealing with Sloth, a lot less emotional. However, Al is much more endearing and kind.
So, I think Al overall.

Al, because he is more of a unique character.
Ed fits a stereotypical archtype, which I have seen countless times before (but its done, really really well).
But the dichotomy of the armor to who is 'inside' the armor is very well done towards character developement.
Especially because it lead to decisions that are NOT typical of normal animes (see the last movie -- very well done because I did not expect what happened)
