I think the gate is real in the series ( not in their subconcience ) because ED lost his arm and leg and AL lost his body there too .. so it has to be real to absorb those .. it can't be inside their heads only

It also teleported ED's body into our world .. which makes it some sort of a dimentional portal between the two worlds .. sort of

I have a quetion

Where did the homonculus get their super abilities from .. are they born with it or did DANTE train them on these abilities somehow .. or maybe it is the stones .. someone tell me !!?

first of all, the gate doesnt really symbolise our subconcience... u need scarifices to access ur subconcience? thats a bit cruel...

and as for the powers of a homonculus... it might come from the powers of the red stone.im not sure about this, but i dont think dante is capable of giving them these abilies. they are not alchemy after all.

and wrath came with his unique ability to aborb stuff into himself

I think it's equivalent trade cause they gain power in exchange for not being human.

the red stone is just an amplifier to amplify certain power that he/she already has. at the beginning, maybe those homonculus have those power from the equivalent trade. ed's mum was resurrected during the rain and she was walking on the rain, so maybe she got her ability of being a water-like human from there.

equivalent trade? well its hardly equivalent for me... i mean, sure they are not the person they was when they are human... but so? what makes a human human? having a soul? id rather give up being human for that kinda power anyday

hmm... I don't think the gate is our subconscious, and I can see how the gate is the equivalent trade, which it probably is. Alchemist do alchemy by putting something up and making something else, so the gate is the like the alchemy for alchemist that puts up the alchemist himself to gain something. So it is like equivalent trade.

Homunculi probably got their power from the red stone, but somehow their power connects with their name which comes from the seven deadly sins? There's gotta be something to it more than that!!

I don't think their names have much to do with their powers. I mean, "Greed" was a shield, "Pride" an eye, these could be said to have a vague connection, but I like the comment about how Sloth was created in the rain and her powers had to do with water. This seems more likely.

I agree the gate probably doesn't symbolize "the subconcious" per say. But this show is chok full of metaphor and, as they say, "universal truth". The whole thing is a huge ethics debate. Must a sacrifice be made to gain something? Is it possible for people to gain only at the loss of others? but the gate seems to show a connectedness, it contains the souls of everyone in "our world". So perhaps it shows that hurting others is really hurting yourself (since we are all connected), so equivalent trade does apply? Not sure if this is it but there is something there.

Not really. Alchemy is done through human souls through that gate. I don't think we channel human lives through our subconscience.

I think the powers of the homunculi are things they're made with, though perhaps they're related to how they're made (Sloth and Wrath). We wouldn't know unless we could find out how they were all created.

The whole alchemy thing being powered by deaths or souls in our world seems a bit creepy to me. Now when I watch scenes like Roy and Ed having their duel I think Gee, I wonder how many lives that was? Although that isn't to say the alchemy causes the deaths just is fueled by them. It's an interesting perspective.
