I heard that they wouldn't make a second season since they would have to focus more on a love relationship with Toru. So it was being left alone. At least thats the rumors I heard.

There seems to be confusion in this thread over whether Akito is male or female. It's clear that Akito is a male. I recently finished watching, so I know. I do agree with the comments that, for various reasons, a second season would be nice. But maybe the open-ended ending was meant to say, 'and life goes on'.
