The history of "PWN, PWNED"
Where the hell did the word come from? and what does it mean? did someone mispell own owned?
PWN is a very common term used by gamers, how ever, can anyone pernounce it? its usually pernounced as ~Pa - awn, or simply pawn~ but in fact there is no real way to pernounce it. I have heared every theory there is for the word PWN like "its supposed to be "own" but the p is like an o with blood dripping from it" or "PWN means " Player - owned" or the theory that "the word owned was banned froma forum so some group of people used pwned to get around the admins ban method"
I have heared almost everything, and its all wrong lol... it originated when a map designer messed up on a victory/defeat message for a map.Its happened on several occasions on different games. But This happened in both starcraft and warcraft and even the unreal games in which is is more well known. read this here
Quote:
pwned
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."
Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."
It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."
OR
"That team totally pwned us."

the fact though is..... not to many people even understand what pwn means.... its basically just owned, or saying like "im better then you, or i beat you" its basically just been used in 1337 language which is gamers language known as Elite. Gamers started to use it after it was misused in the game. Its obviously just a term that caught on which everyone saw it. Now its used all the time. I use the world all the time myself, I like it in fact. and I pernounce it "pawn" or "pwin" either way, there is no wrong or right way to say it .
I hope this helps clerify the use of the words pwn, pwnage, pwnt(pwned past tense), pwned , Ect you may have heard.

Re: The history of "PWN, PWNED"
lol, awesome, TU1
another way I like to think about it is when I say that I PWN someone, I'm basically saying "I OWN YOU!!! YOU ARE MY PAWN NOW BEOTCH!!!" or something like that
so,
pwn-age (pawn - age): to be made a pawn of someone's; to be owned

Re: The history of "PWN, PWNED"
lol.... I just think of it as being owned.... or being defeated... when my clan on xbox introduced me to the word I was like... wtf.... what is pwned? I assume you guys are mispelling owned? I had NO IDEA what the word ment.. but that was like.. what was it.. 3 years ago? 4? When xbox came out... I got xbox live so thats why im in the clan for it... I dunno.. I was just so confused and they were like "dude please tell me your kidding...." I was like seriously lost lol.
I hope what I have poster here will help clear up those who are also lost or confused. I use the word all the time now, for almost 3 years now I think... but yea, I like it

Re: The history of "PWN, PWNED"
"pwn": A typo-deliberate version of own, a slang term often used to express superiority over others that can be used maliciously, depending on the situation. This could also be spelled "0\/\/n3d" or "pwn3d," among other variations.
