Is love a chemical reaction?

I disagree (of course or why would I have started this thread ). I think that defines lust, not love. I believe that love is a choice, and that you could choose to love anybody.

For me love is that you care a lot of the person and want to spend your time with her/him and it is a spychial reaction. You are almost ready to anything for her/him and the person (how I say it..) have space in your heart..

I think that my initial attraction was based on other things - looks, similar interests, easy communication, common beliefs... But when it comes to having problems in the relationship (ie serious fights) I certainly believe that it is a choice to love her. Maybe "falling in love" isn't completely a choice, but I think you could "fall in love" with almost anybody that you choose to invest interest in. I suppose it also depends on how you define love. If it means you're willing to give up anything, like your life, for them, then that would mean I love my best (male) friend too, but I'm not gay. Giving things up for the person is a choice - often just the choice to not be selfish. And I did choose that friend. On a campus of thousands of people, I chose to hang out with certain ones and purposefully develope a relationship with them. So as much as it goes against Hollywood stereotypes of romantic, everlasting love at first sight, I do think that I could choose to love somebody else - but I've already made my choice and I'm sticking with her.

On the Hollywood side of things - I think that movies portray an unrealistic image of love that sets a negative standard on our society. Once in a million years those relationships happen, which is cool, but I don't think people should be expecting to all of a sudden one day just find the right person instantly and at the same time all of a sudden develope a perfect relationship with that person. Ok, I'm starting to ramble. It's late and I'm tired. By the way, has anyone else heard about the 5 (I believe) Greek loves? Something like eros, agape, and some others.

anyway love is not simply a chemical reaction, it is an emotion that really dosent make sense. if it were a chemical reacion there would be people out there finding a way to stop it. Also love and lust are based on experiences learned i mean what makes one person more attractive than another, its not a chemical reaction that is telling you this.
Also love is wonderful lol. I mean how can you base relationships on chemical reactions, sooner or later they run out.

anyway my parents 31st wedding anniversy is today hows that for love lol (especially putting up with 5 kids )

If love is a chemical reaction, then how is it, that I have a freind, who has a GF who is beutiful, a wonderful person, great personality and everything else, we get along really well, and they have their relationship issues, how is it that i havent fallen in love with her? yet can meet some girl in all reasonable aspects just like her, and fall for her?, shouldnt my "primitive animal instincts" take over, and me try to get her for myself, regardless of my freind? what is it that would keep such an urge from welling up inside of me and robbing him of what makes him happy?, maybe its the fact that God gave me the kind of love that i have no desire to do that to someone whom i care about, its not chemicals, its something true and real,

oh, and why is it if a girl is goergous yet is mean and snobby, i am dis-attracted and i dont fall madly in love with her? yet if a girl who isnt nearly as pretty, yet has a great attitude and is a funny happy smiling person is so much more attractive to me i would take her over the other girl in an instant?

if it is an animal instinct that drives me, shouldnt i be driven to the most athletic or mean " competitive" partner to further the superiority of my bloodline in my offspring?

the arguement for it being chemical is flawed, if it had to do with that and we were partnered with the right person because of some animal instinct, why is it we end up at times with people who cant bear children? thats kind of off the track of continuing on isnt it?

if its all chemicals, then why do i feel for someone in pain, or hurt, why do i care about the feelings of others? why is it that i try to avoid harm to others? if its chemicals, i shouldnt care one way or the other, you know, survival of the fittest and get outa my way....

i just dont like love being reffered to as a chemical reaction, thats like saying when i have a wife i wont love her, when i have kids i wont love them, and that all the people i know i dont really love, but i tell them " i love you" not " i have a chemical reaction that makes me not want to walk over you to get my way", Love IS real, I am driven by love, not a bunch of chemicals
