Ok here's what you do:
First you tell a teacher, parent, or , even better, the school principal. This should get him in sometype of trouble sometime. If you tell the teacher(s), they will keep a tougher eye on him.
Now about the whole "I'll get my gang to hurt you" threat situation. Simply tell whoever you are talking to from above and state that. Also tell your parents. If you do wind up hurt (because chances are they won't kill you) then they know why and can take direct action against them because then it's assualt and battery. This can get the kid in a lot of trouble. If he (and maybe his gang) comes back from his (their) punishment and still wants more and ends up hurting you again you do it again.
Or, you could just keep a knife on you at all times and walk to places with a friend. Therefore when you stab the person trying to hurt you, you have a witness. Stabbing someone in self-defense isn't illegal >.>
While the knife option may sound like fun, I'd stick with 'tell teacher' approach. You might get physically hurt, but wounds can heal faster than mental scars. Probably why mental scars are called scars >.> <.<
