Re: J. R. R. Tolkien, anyone?
One of the true literary greats of the modern era. Haven't been able to read all his works, having first encountered LOTR when I was 10. Finished all three novels back then in three days straight, then moved on to 'The Hobbit'.
Needless to say, LOTR inspired a great deal of my RPG days as a DM/GM.
When I first watched the movie version of 'Fellowship', I thought, "YEAH! THIS IS A REAL BOOK-TO-MOVIE!!!" Sure, we didn't see any Tom Bombadil, but a good 80% of it was straight out of the book.
Then came 'Towers' and 'King'...
After 'Towers', I decided to boycott 'King'. Bloody freakin' disappointing the second one was. A more 'primal' Treebeard? That just sucks. At any rate I played the game version of the third instalment waaaaaaaay before the movie, so I knew fairly well how disappointing it would be. I watched the third one only because my best pal wanted some company (it was a free screening at any rate), and even he had one comment: What the heck happened to the vision Frodo saw in the mirror of Galadriel? I asked him to read the book and he ended up disappointed as I am.
Peter Jackson claiming that he had to make the story more 'Hollywood-like' didn't help. I was just plain pissed. That's one DVD collection I'll never get even if I was promised a place in Heaven.
But I do love 'The Silmarillion' as much as LOTR. Great background on Sauron's beginnings and the Shadow's predecessor, Morgoth. Wrote a book review back in school on it that got me a book prize.
Ah, memories...

Re: J. R. R. Tolkien, anyone?
I've known Tolkien a long time before the movies were even planned. My favourite is the Silmarillion and between the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, I prefere the Hobbit, although I adore both Bilbo is much more of a funny character than Frodo, and him and Gandalf can be hilarious

I also read it before the film. I loved the book and I like the film. I just regret that this great work became so comertialized... maybe thats why I still like Hobbit so much - it's like a hidden treasure .
