STORY INTRODUCTION:
We meet Haruhi Fujioka, a brilliant student of average means who got into Ouran High School, a school for the children of the mega-affluent in THAT part of the universe, because of a scholarship she obtained through her superb intellect, and her (unmentioned) dream.
While searching for a quiet place to study, the nerdy and gender-indifferent Haruhi stumbled upon a door that led to an apparently unused music room and into the midst of the Host Club: an organization where "handsome teenage boys with a lot of time, wealth, and beauty" entertain "girls that have just as much time, wealth, and beauty on their hands".
after she was briefly introduced to the club (since the club leader Suoh Tamaki was amazed by Fujioka's unusual "common-ness"), Haruhi was curiously scrutinized by several club members (without knowing she was female [except for the omniscient Kyoya Ootori]). In her terrorized state, Haruhi broke their 8,000,000 Yen vase, was unable to pay, and therefore became the Club's dog from there until she would be able to pay off her debt in wages.
However, during one of their club sessions, the club found out that with her glasses off, Haruhi, with her large brown eyes, was one stunning "guy". After giving Haruhi a make-over, SuohTamaki (their leader) decides that instead of being a mere dog, Haruhi was to become a host, and would pay off her debts that way.
When they finally discovered that she was a girl, the party begins...
CHARACTERS:
wooh!!! after finishing the entire series, the first thing i realized was that i couldn't remember the all characters' names, although i did remember their personalities pretty well. nevertheless... here's the introduction..
HARUHI FUJIOKA: a level-headed and logical girl who doesn't mind cross-dressing as long as she can pay off her debt. has an interesting father. is the only commoner in the ultra-rich dimension called Ouran High. is considered the natural type.
TAMAKI SUOU: the naive supposed "prince" who calls himself the "father" (truly silly, ne?) of the club. is always out to save damsels (and anybody else) in distress.. is clueless about everything that is happening around him and inside him.
KYOYA OOTORI: the most logical person in the group. he SAYS that he will never do anything that is not profitable. does everything in the club that is related to finances. is probably the richest and the smartest among all the rich kids in the campus. has an interesting family background. is considered the cool type and is called the "mother" of the club.
HIKARU and KAORU HITACHIIN: involve themselves in what a fan has coined "twincest". when together, they are gross and unnervingly intimate. When apart, Kaoru is the frail, reflective and deeply mature twin, while Hikaru is his angst-ridden, confused, selfish and angry counterpart.
MITSUKUNI "Hunny or Honey" HANINOZUKA: is the lolita-shota type. is short and has kiddie features. loves to eat sweets. is the group's senpai together with Mori. is a very surprising kid.
TAKASHI "Mori" MORINOZUKA: is the silent guy who looms over Hani like a bodyguard. is always... just...there. has interesting strengths.
RENGE HOUSHAKUJI: the self-proclaimed manager of the club. is annoying. constantly pops out of nowhere on a spinning platform.
REVIEW:
OHHC in a sentence: "Cinderella meets the real world."
since i have to face facts, i have to admit that the concept isn't new. poor girl meets rich guy, they fall in love and they live happily ever after, end of story. what is different about Ouran High school though, is that it could happen. Haruhi tried her best to get into a top-notch school not because she wanted to meet the love of her life *gags* and to marry him, but because she wanted to fulfill a dream that she had ever since she was a kid. Haruhi thus somehow represent the career-minded woman of today which is pretty cool.
she also defies the standard Cinderella stereotype given that she'd do drastic stuff just because she thought that was what she was supposed to do. unlike Disney's Cinderella, Haruhi did not waste her days wishing that she would be whisked away into a castle by some prince-in-shining-whatnots... she actually got into the castle by herself (actually, she did it with an impressive transcript) and she even gained the respect of the prince who she left in a daze because of her sterling existence...
the "prince" also isn't the dashing debonair who saves the hime from some gastric-juice breathing dragon but is actually and idiotic idealist who thinks that he can make the world better by doing one good deed, one person at a time. another unique aspect of this anime is the fact that the audience is left in a daze wondering who the prince actually is. well, there is one who actually is the stereotyped "prince", but as to who Haruhi's prince is... it remains unclear. having to choose between 6 guys is pretty tough (although it can be narrowed down to four or three...two..one....)..
which brings me back to Haruhi... being the focus of all the main guys in this particular anime, one would think that we probably can understand her thoughts and that we can peer deep into her soul and find out if she has any feelings for a particular person... all for naught. she seldom even blushes. and one can usually tell what characters' feelings are by cheek discolorations... why HAruhi Why???
tsktsktsk...
when compared to other school-related anime, this series provides a relatively satisfactory closure. in comparison to School Rumble (another anime that revolves around the angsty realm that is High school) Ouran gives the audience that satisfied feeling after watching the entire series and after all THAT suspense. although the episode before the ending really can make fanatics high-strung..
the artwork is also pretty detailed. i'm a fanatic... go on... strangle me... it was as if everything was so carefully drawn that you could actually see the characters coming to life (okay...that was just my dementia acting up again)...
i dunwannabe a spoiler so i have to stop here.
to wrap everything up.. (and i will edit this review when i can...) this isn't really the genre that i'm into but it got me hooked. romance is a little ho-hum to me and bishounen and shoujo stuff are just okay but this series is funny, and sweet, and unnerving, and satisfying all at the same time!!! It even makes me release endorphins - the happy hormones!!! i loved and still love this anime and i give it... *dRRRRRRuMMMMM roLLLLLL* tadahhhh!!!
9.567832 out of 10.
i recommend this anime to people who want to get away from their maddening lives, or to those who want to laugh and smile, and be happy, and sing, and... you get the pic.. LAlalalalalalalalalala!!!
THIS IS NOT AN AD (just additional info [for anyone who's interested] given that my review is pretty messed up... gahahhahahahah!!! sorry guys) -->>>
