well i have been trying out k-lite's mega codec pack and i find it quite useful. it has the codec for mkv files inside and you can either use the meadia player classic that comes along with the codec pack or use windows media player. the only difference is that with windows media player is that you cant create a playlist of mkv files

Agreed!! Using VLC media player is much less hassle as compared to downloading codecs cos they dont always work since there are so many codecs around...
If anything else i wonder as to why is it the VLC player seems to be the only player which doesnt need codecs, tats not to say im complainin or anything but i jez find it plain weird as to how bothersome it is to dwl codecs

I think cccp is the best. It covers any format and using zoom player (or media player classic will work too) it plays better than VLC. On higher quality encoded formats like h.264, ogm, or mkv VLC sometimes lags with the subtitles, well at least for me.

H.264

The New Industry Standard
Already ratified as part of the MPEG-4 standard — MPEG-4 Part 10 — and the ITU-T’s latest video-conferencing standard, H.264 is now mandatory for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray specifications (the two formats for high-definition DVDs) and ratified in the latest versions of the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasters) and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standards. Numerous broadcast, cable, videoconferencing and consumer electronics companies consider H.264 the video codec of choice for their new products and services. This adoption by a wide variety of open standards means that any company in the world can create devices — mobile phones, set-top boxes, DVD players and more —

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Different companies are supporting it right now...

quicktime, Ati and others...

Quicktime has a codec for this...
