all or nothing love for anime
ok here are the facts. i'm 23 and i watch anime. it's not something i'de go screaming down the streets but hey i do what i like.
the thing is i only like SOME anime. other people tend to act like anime is some kind of sophisticated art which its not. anime is a cartoon directed at young adult to children audiences. it doesn't matter if it has blood and gore and sexual references it's still meant primarily for teenagers. thats not a bad thing But..
most anime i found to be crap. even the ones directed towards older teens is just trying too hard to be complex and adult like, which fools kiddies into thinking its actually meant for adults but anyway. sometimes i find the ones for less "mature" audiences and more simple storylines to be far more interesting. like i prefer naruto over basilisk and ninja scroll, though ninja scroll has some good moments. i like my neighbor totoro over hellsing.
the anime i have found liking to is rare and inbetween. the ones i have found to like i LOVE...but everything else seems to fall way short. its like all or nothing.
the ones i like i can count on my fingers.
movies:
princess mononoke
my neighbor totoro
spirited away
grave of the fireflies
castle in the sky
ghost in the shell
series:
naruto:without the fillers
blood+
berserk
ok the bottom line is i want to know who's on the same page as me. to say you can still be an anime lover and hate stuff like chobits and female super heroins that wear skirts up to there"you know what" giving the impression that japanese are perverts. i like anime's quirky humor but anime plotlines that involve some dude and a girl female robot that has a button up her ass to turn her on. CMON!!! i mean how can i still walk down the street with pride after watching that crap.
does anyone at all get my drift or am i alone here? if you all think i'm crazy and mentally disturbed don't bother replying. if you feel you can connect do tell me what you think and anime movies or series that you found to like.

Re: all or nothing love for anime
well it doesnt matter what you watch but that you do it in moderation. i do go to the conventions every now and then but its for the environment and some kickass posters and it really depends on what anime you're watching. there are some that are not meant to please younger audiences and many with complex storylines but very satisfying in the end. well ill have to disagree with you on hellsing. i love it. but of course miyazaki is a master and you cant really compare anything to his work. most of the movies in the top ten in japan are his. there is speed grapher which i found riveting. hanbun no tsuki which made me cry to no end. and i loved AIR. that was an amazing anime. but there are the good mangas out there to. try this one Densha Otoko. i loved that one. but i do enjoy the perverted ones as well. heck the last poster i got at one of the cons was so close to being cataloged as mature. oh gungrave is another good one and trigun. i loved those.

I catch your drift.
Even though I like Chobits (though I found the button placement tasteless), I can understand that a filter is important.
For my own time, everyone seemingly had to love 'Akira'.
Yes, I'll agree it was beautiful and well crafted for the 1980's. But the plot line...well, let's just say I've seen enough depressing-mega-death stories that I was bored silly by it.
(Which I why I enjoy Miyazaki. And Valley of the Wind will always be one of my favorites)
But I was demeaned by others, when I voiced my disapproval of the subject. It wasn't until almost 10 years later, with the original 'X' movie, did people finally say: even if its beautiful and well done - we want a freaking plot beyond everyone dieing!
It was if they had Hamlet-complexes or something.

Re: all or nothing love for anime
well gee thanx for your replies guys. for yonathen all i can say is WOW!! that is alot of anime =). i certainly don't like anime that much but i'de like to hear what type of anime you like best. actually i do like anime that much hehe but maybe my taste is more distinct.
i actually got into anime pretty late, like two years ago. one series which so many anime fans swear on is dragon ball. whats that one like? is it all just hack and slash or what?
i'm always on the prowl for a new good anime. like recently i just watched through two whole anime's, basilisk and last exile cause i heard people giving them good reviews. the animation quality was very impressive, but the endings left me wanting more. i can't understand how people can put so much effort into an anime and then leave it at a dead end or give it a bad ending. Worse possible scenario to end a series is HUH?? cause you spend so much time with the characters it just makes u feel sad to see it end badly.
anyway, mr2000, yah i Love mayao hiyazaki. the man is a genius and i will definately try out "air". never even heard of it =)....i'm actually sensing this is gona be good can't wait to try it out.

Re: all or nothing love for anime
I have several friends that watch anime that are either the same age (30) or older. It's how we relax after a hard days work, although our tastes in series are completely different. For example my best friend loves Dragonball, Silverhawks, Transformers, and older series like that. Another one of my friends likes Ballisk, Ninja Scroll, and other ninja series. I don't really care for any of those, I prefer action comedies, like Naruto, FMP, Vandreed, and Bleach. So your not alone, although older watchers are less likely to outright tell you they watch. I found out one of my good friends watched when I was over at his house for new years, and was looking for some shows for the kids to watch for example.
