most anime's are "inspired" by other series... have a look at Flame of Recca and Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto and Dragonball, just 2 name a couple... (the earlier being the "rip-off")
it happens so commonly it's not funny... some are purely inspired others are almost direct rip-offs...

hong kong have a history of that stuff happening, the most famous one is about the video game street fighter n tekkan. the director uses the exact look n abitily of the char in his movie, n got his ass sued.

Hey man the Chinese are making a live movie on Initial D. Don't know if it is a rip off but then let me see the movie and decide if it can be called that. There are a lot of animes that are inspired from books, folktales, movies ... etc but don't think they are rip off man. They have permission to do it.

yes... and no....
yes alot of story is from myths and legends... and no... alot is ripped
there are 2 main "rips"
1 - the artist copies the main idea, and main character/s (with some modifications) a virtual clone... (eg... YYH - FofR)
2the artist is "inspired" by their favourite series... some characters can be traced to the original series (eg...DB - Naruto [goku... dumb, orphan, loud....uzamaki naruto.... virtually same based char...]) the creator of Naruto says he was "inspired" by DB
hong kong or china in general aren't the culprits...it's japanese manga artists who copy there favourite series that make animes which are rips
Hong kong series are usually made by japanese anyway.... as the chinese are shit at manga...
it's a good thing for anime... as not all will have no precedent... (Beck, FMA, Cowboy Bebop...)
and often rips, or "inspired" series are as good, better, or just different... eg... Cowboy bebop... - outlaw star...
go the rips!!!! (well "inspired")
Travis
both good "bounty hunting" series.... yet both similar.. and yet very different...

Re: anime knock off?
well it's not bad to inspire yourself by someone else but don't copy too much.
