I think in some way the girl has got to be able to look up to the guy for some quality or trait he possesses that can hold her attention...

I believe in communication; so far it's been my boon, although the two sisters in my life think I'm putting my looks down too much... so I guess for girls looks DO matter, though they might not need the best looking guy, but at least someone they can (a) talk to; (b) laugh with/at; (c) cry on; (d) look to for some guidance at some time in their lives and (e) are supportive enough to respect and cherish the decisions they make however unreasonable or ludicrous.

That's my 2 cents worth.
