It's a trick. The last line is changed and almost everyone gets fooled except those who already know the answer. You said each guy only paid 9$ after being refunded, so you are SUBTRACTING 1 dollar from what they orginally paid. So you SUBTRACTED 3 dollars total. Now you're at 27. Then you said the bellhop kept 2 dollars, so we are supposed to SUBTRACT 2 more. Instead you ADDED 2 dollars, fooling everyone, because now we're 1 dollar short of 30. But we're not trying to get 30 dollars, we're trying to get 25. We had 30, subtracted 3, now we must subtract 2 more from the bellhop to get 25. No dollar was lost, obviously, you simply added instead of subtracted, and pretended we were trying to get to 30 instead of 25.
