Agreed, you can simple MP3 players that can even act like a normal flash drive all for under $50 (if not cheaper for less storage capacity). Of course the Ipod series is the best, but its no long the only decent option.
For myself, 90% of the time I listen to music these days, I'm excercising. All low impact of course, thus when I go for a walk or other type of highly repetative yet low resistance excercises I use Music to clear my head and focus on the music instead of the workout. Makes excercising enjoyable.
