In the end of Suzu-Shoukei-Youko serie (ep. 48 or 49 i think) when Youko already gained control of the country and invited that old man (i don't remember his name) to be her adviser and he told her that he could make a sheath to the sword. She said that she didn't need that anymore because she was able to control the monkey soul of the sword (Suiguutou's his name) and it has the ability to show her the truths inside her heart.
The monkey is the soul of the sword. It's him that makes the sword one of the strongest and it's him again that lures the owners of the sword into the bad way. Please notice that in the beginning of the anime (about ep. 2-3) Youko was given the sword but she lost the sheath in the battle. Since then the monkey started to appear. So the monkey is not the sheath but the soul of the sword itself. Without the shealth there's nothing to control it and it begins to appear.
Am I right???

WELL DONE.
The monkey is part of the ablilty of the sword also a kind of test of the well of the owner. As it can see into owner's thoughts and can emphasize those thoughts for whatever purpose as we saw in the series where he cause Youko countless nightmare. But, like Youko said in the end of the third story and pointed out in the quoted message. It's merely reflecting what one had in mind, a mirror of ones own thoughts. One that can face his/her own thoughts need not hide behind some restraining board/screen. The abilility to show what owner want to see did not relay on the monkey. As many time in the third story, Youko still can visual what's to come and what had happened eventhought she already conquered the monkey in first story.
